PAÑCATATTVA -
THE FIVE ELEMENTS

An Overview

According to the lineage teachings our work is based on, everything is made up of the elements earth, water, fire, wind and space. These basic 5 elements embody certain fundamental qualities of reality and manifest themselves in the world around us just as they do in our bodies, personalities and even in our mind and experience. This means everyone of us is composed of these 5 elements in this very unique way, that makes us who we are - how we are perceived by others and how we perceive ourselves to be.

In this way all of the elements play a vital role making up our body-mind-complex, but usually some elements are more dominant than others. The more predominant or active elements can express themselves as our charming attributes and characteristics. Be it our physical appearance and abilities, our preferences and habits, the emotions we are prone to feel, the way we communicate with others, the way we perceive the world around us – the very way our body and our mind work, the very way we are. However, if one or more of these elements is overactive or another one is lacking – in other words, when the elements are manifesting themselves in an imbalanced way: dis-ease, dis-order or other disturbances will arise. With yogic practices such as specific element-related asanas, pranayama or meditations, we maintain proper balance and achieve an harmonious state of being.
